Loud giggles are coming from the other room. Katie and Tommy are making airplane sounds that end with some sort of farting noise. I’ll never understand why kids find that so hysterical.

Picking up the plates from the dinner table, I exhale and mumble, “I’ll be glad once they grow out of their potty-humor phase.”

“Do boys ever outgrow that?” Logan asks with a serious look on his face as he walks over to help me clean up. I respond with a lift of one eyebrow. “I’m kidding,” he quickly adds, reaching around me and grabbing the now-empty pizza box. “Yeah, I gotta admit it’s definitely not my favorite phase either.”

We head to the kitchen, where I load the plates in the dishwasher while he disposes of all the trash from our meal. He and Tommy came over to our house after practice for pizza night, even though Logan said we could all have dinner at his place. But we’ve done that the last two times, and it only feels right that we host the boys for a change. If I’m honest, I think he likes having us in his space so he can dote on us, but you’ll never hear me complain about it.

“We didn’t get to talk much at dinner with the two chatterboxes at the table,” I confess, leaning against the counter. “How was your day?”

He sidles up next to me and shrugs with an easy smile on his face. “It was fine. It’s much better now, though.” I grin while trying to ignore the warmth spreading across my cheeks and playfully nudge his shoulder with mine. “Tell me about your day,” he requests, sounding genuinely interested.

“It was actually pretty good. Remember I told you a few days ago that I was prepping for a big presentation? I spent hours and hours working on it.” He nods, so I continue. “Well, I gave it this morning, and it went even better than I thought it would. The CEO came up to me afterward and told me it was outstanding.”

“What? Why didn’t you say something earlier?” His brows lift, and a huge smile turns up the corners of his mouth. “That’s great, babe! I know you worked so hard on that. I’m really proud of you.”

His genuine expression, the respect conveyed in his tone, the adoring way he looks at me… Everything about him is so open and earnest that I have to turn away so he can’t see the considerable effect he has on me right now. His words sail through my chest and warm my heart so much that my chin starts to wobble and there’s nothing I can do to stop what comes next.

My eyes well with tears I want to hide, and I can barely choke out the words, “Don’t do that.”

“Don’t do what? Kelsey? What’s wrong, baby girl?” Concerned, Logan moves to stand in front of me.

When his hands gently cup my cheeks and lift my face up, I whisper, “Don’t say things like that.
